Best. Goal. Ever.

@daviddrakehunter 17 seconds to play and short handed, Larmer had no business looking up ice.

@RichYan33 If you look at the 1:44 mark, you see Gillis take the puck away and Larmer start up the ice for a breakout pass - with Lemieux going in the other direction. Mario admitted after the game that it was actually *he* that was out of position, cheating towards the net, hoping for a play. But before Gillis can gain full control, Francis desperation poke-checks the puck and it slides to Murphy. The rest is history. But it came within a whisker of having a possibly very different ending.

I know it's been a year since you posted this, but you asked for Mike Lang's call on Lemieux's goal on Game 1 of the '92 cup. Search "Mike Lang, Blackhawks" and you'll find it.

Point taken. I wouldn't want to be the player responsible for covering Lemieux; Keenan must have torn him a new one. How in the world could a player(players in lemieux's case)leave Lemieux uncovered?
Even without his teammates' screw-up, Belfour practically passed that puck to Lemieux, who seldom missed a rebound like that, even with a player on his back (I shouldn't say "back" when talking about Lemieux)
Keenan's second string goalie was Dominique Hasek; what if... (I know; 20/20 hind-sight)

I'm no fan of Mike Keenan, however, I recall him being very vocal about how his team blew the assignment, it was not his fault.

For one thing it's not a "line," it's a power play unit, secondly, it's Larry Murphy, not the ol '29er.
-
Check out the situation when the game clock shows 15 seconds left. Murphy is just about to shoot the puck, while a Blackhawk is trying to poke the puck behind Murphy to a teammate cheating towards Penguin ice. As a result, Lemieux was absolutely wide open heading towards the net; there wasn't a Hawk within twenty feet.
This was foolish of Mike Keenan; he should have played it safe and have Lemieux covered, especially being short-handed and the face-off in the Hawk's zone.

So Mario forces Smith to take the penalty and then 45 seconds later the Hawks leave him completely uncovered? I mean there are four HOFers on that power play unit and you can't cover everyone but really! You have to know where Lemieux is!
