Our hot tub is open all the time too, but we leave it empty and never use it though. We have a thin plastic cover that is cracked down the middle so rain still pours through, and we get decent snow sometimes here in western Maryland, so a 12"+ snowstorm would put a bit of strain on it :) We just pump out the water after rain storms to try to prevent drownings....have found crickets plus spiders with a 6"+ leg span, along with frogs and even a small rabbit at the bottom of the tub once, drowned.
