Meanwhile, aboard the Starship Enterprise...
The Enterprise is being pursued by the Romulans when suddenly a loud clang of metal on metal is heard... The ship starts to slow...
Scotty: Captain! We're in trouble! The ship is no longer being propelled by the engine when I open the throttle!
Captain Kirk: Oh dear Scotty, I believe we may have a problem in the transmission room.
Scotty: Whatever could be the cause of that!?
Captain Kirk: Did you check the Warp engine's drive chain tension on maintenance day?
Scotty: *Blank look*
Captain Kirk: That's it Scotty! You're demoted to Hull Cleaner, and you won't be getting any more of those special Belgian chocolates from the officers room either!

Funnily enough a few days before this happened I did my routine maintenance and checked the tyre pressures, engine oil level and oiled the chain. But I didn't check the tension! :S
Oh well, just as well it went back on without a problem. ;)

  • nice video :D

  • @crackerstolemybike Thanks :)

  • Same thing once happened to me but fortunately i was doing like 10mph at the intersection. I spent some time to get the wheel loose and put the chain back.

  • @xghaf Yeah getting the chain back on at the side of the road is the fun part ;)

  • Dammit Jim I'm a doctor not a mechanic! I've had a lot of friends call me on the phone saying my bike is making a weird metal slapping noise. First thing I tell them is to check their chain tension. So far it has always been the problem. At least you can identify the problem and do your own maintenance which is better than my friends.

  • @datsun280zx81 Chains are a real pain, they need a lot of care...

  • @MrUrnameis I already had a professional do it like 2 yrs ago.... Its the same chain that flew off... I went back on the interstate in my car and found it on the side of the road.. picked it up and went home and cleaned it up real good and put it back on the bike and got a new rivit link and had someone else rivited it on there... Never came off ever...

  • @LightningMAS That's why I was kind of shocked that your RK chain came of. Cause RK and D.I.D make some really good chains and the only weakest link in this chain was probably the installation of the rivet master link. Otherwise people would be suing RK and D.I.D for their chains snapping, they have built a reputation unparalleled by no other motorcycle chain manufactures out here. I run D.I.D chains and I have my friend install them cause if I did it, I would probably end up like you or dead.

  • The way I look at it, doing it yourself is fine and so is learning, but as far as I am concerned:motorcycle chains or brakes for that matter are not something you should be doing yourself without someone knowledgeable or experienced guiding you, that just sounds scary from the sound of it. Either pay someone or get an experienced or knowledgeable riding buddy to help you out, I am just saying.

  • @LightningMAS Last time I checked you need a specialized tool to clamp and flare the heads for a rivet master link. A C-clamp alone is not sufficient, unless it's specialized for clamping and flaring the heads on a motorcycle chain. Clip links are used by a lot of people that ride the street, you will be surprised-if installed correctly they work-problems arise when they are not installed properly just like with anything else.

  • @MrUrnameis RK chain, on 05 gsxr 600. I installed myself with a C-clamp on a rivited master link.. clip links are for dirtbikes.. It flew off when i was doing 100+mph. Scared the fuck out of me. GOUGE the shit out of my rear rim.. :(

  • @LightningMAS What type of chain was it? What type of bike were you riding? And who installed the master link on the chain? Was it a clip link master link, not to be confused with the rivet master link which requires specialized tools to compress the plates together?

  • @gpzDave no prob :]
