Fangio is undoubtedly the greatest ever driver. Five world titles those cars was incredible, but remeber also that the F1 championship began when he was 39, his peak as a driver would've been during WW2. Consider on top though, that if he hadn't missed the 52 and 53 seasons with a broken neck he would have won 7 titles in a row and he retired not because he was past it, but because he had lost so many friends in crashes. If he'd had an uninterrupted career he could easily have won 20+ titles!

@aford1985 He is the geatest because he won with every models
of cars he drove, and, it's maybe hard to say, he is one who doesn't die
in race (these cars were really hard and dangerous to drive)

FANGIO GOT 7 CROWNS. IN 1949 WAN 6 OVER 9 GP, AND IN 1950 HE WAS TOLD TO LET FARINA WIN THE CROWN IN THE LAST RACE , FANGIO KNEW THAT HE HAD THE CAR TO WIN ,BUT ORDERS ARE ORDERS, BOTH WERE IN POSITION TO WIN,BUT TEAM ORDERED
TO FAIL IN FAVOR OF FARINA. WHAT A SHAME FARINA
DIFFERENT IS THE CASE OF THE 7 DIRTY CROWNS OF SCHUMACHER, WHO BUMPED EVERYONE AND CORNERED EVERYONE IN THE STARTING GRID,BARRICHELO LET HIM
WIN 2 TITLES, COS TEAMS ORDERS. REALLY A SHAME
FANGIO ON THE CONTRARY

No pitwall in those days

1956: Safest year in Formula One history
-
Only the car letting him down in the last race (and in the first race of the 1950 season) meant he wasn't 1950 champion.
-
and of course he was in the formula for only just 8 years.... an unbelievable and unrepeatable driver....
-
The reason why he retired (in addition he himself stated he was old enough)
JMF: I was testing for the beginning of the 1958 season. The car was handling well. The day after, I noticed some unbalance in certain corners. I asked the chief of mechanics if they made some changes in the car. He answered: "yes, we changed the cushions".
"Why did you do that? The old cushions were just fine!" - I told him
"Oh yes indeed, but these new ones pay us..." -he replied

@aford1985 i agree, Fangio was much better than Schumacher, Alonso etc etc
Very mavellous documentation indeed but, please, can the fellow who had the good idea to post it, change the year. This course has happened in 1956 not in 1957, Fangio drives a Ferrari 801 (ex-Lancia D50) and not a Maserati 250F. Sorry to seem so punctilious.
