The volcano that's been the number one news story the past five days has a name that British and Irish television newsreaders won't attempt. These attempts should bring a smile to any Icalandic person at any rate!

    The translation of Eyjafjallajökull is...

    eyja = island

    fjalla = mountain

    jökull = glacier

  • haha ææj ekki vera svona vond við þau hahaha.. íslenska er næst erfiðasta tungumál í heimi you know ;)

    but yeah, the old man got it the best.. and if you listen to some other videos of icelandic people saying it and splitting it up it's not that hard haha. there are much more difficoult words tha Eyjafjallajökull.. for an example Vaðlaheiðarvegagerðarmannaverkfærageymsluskúrslyklakippuhringurinn haha. try to pronounce that and then you won't find eyjafjallajökull that hard

  • so what does the word actually mean? can it be translated or it is like a name that only would make sense in Icelandic? Icelandic intrigues me, it's a fascinating language. Being Norwegian, I understand some words here and there, and it's interesting how I understand more Icelandic than Finnish, but find Finnish much easier to pronounce :P

  • haha þau láta eins og þau séu eitthvað vangefin xD Haha, þarf greinilega pínu æfingu fyrir útlendingana haha <3 Sá gamli náði þessu best xD

  • Yep, put a smile on my face :o)

    Always funny to hear foreigners trying to pronounce Eyjafjallajökull.

    Why the media didn't just jump on a translated version I don't know. Islands' Mountains Glacier would have been so much easier (or Glacier of islands' mountains).
