Anyone who thinks the Detroit 6V-53 doesn't have enough pep for a Class A fire apparatus should watch this video. We had an old Seagrave K-cab pump that was repowered with one which replaced a V-12 gas that was almost 3 times the size (318 cubic inches vs. 906). Our Seagrave mechanic referred to the 6V-53 as a "little pisspot" and recommended at least a 6-71, though the rig weighed only 13 tons fully loaded. She not only had plenty of pep but got 7 miles per gallon vs. only 3 for the V-12.
