Yes that's kind of how I think about it too. What are they trying to say, and why.
Looking for multi-sources and maybe even other opinions are worth considering too sometimes.
It'd be a lot quicker if they'd just tell the truth to start with - save a lot of work for you. (Of course that's not why they're there. It's got noting to do with truth).
