I managed to split the belly of my instrument after putting on a new fingerboard, fretting and dowelling of a split corner block. What gauge strings did you get and the brand? If I can get 7, 10 etc then I'll give it some more time, they really are lovely instruments. My tutor was quite astonished how rich a sound mine gave and got lost in himself for 20 minutes. The sensitivity of these makes them very good for hammer on, pull off method of play, it'll help your fluency to include it.
