Philharmonia Baroque playing the third movement (Adagio molto e cantabile) of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, accompanied by a scrolling bar-graph score.

FAQ

Q: Where can I get this recording?
A: From Magnatune
http://magnatune.com/artists/albums/pb-beethoven9/

Q: Who is conducting?
A: Nicholas McGegan.

Q: What do the colors in the bar-graph score mean?
A: The colors show which instruments are playing. Here's a chart:
http://www.musanim.com/img/b9m2_colors.jpg

Q: Why are the notes different sizes?
A: Each group of instruments (strings, woodwind, brass, percussion) is shown in a separate layer, and has a different size; this helps you see when instruments in more than one group are playing the same pitch at the same time. The timpani is blurred because that's how it sounds to me.

Q: Please tell me more about the composer.
A: You can read about Beethoven here
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beethoven

Q: Is there a way I could make bar-graph scores like this myself?
A: The Music Animation Machine MIDI file player will generate a display like this; you can get the (Windows) software here:
http://www.musanim.com/player/
There are lots of places on the web where you can get MIDI files; when I'm looking for MIDI files, I usually go to the Classical Archives site first:
http://www.classicalarchives.com/

Q: Could you please do a MAM video of _________?
A: See:

  • This sends waves of emotions through me like I have never felt before, I am extremely grateful that this was posted; smalin you have made a sad fellow happy.

  • @TeeHeel I'm happy to have made a difference.

  • Can you please animate Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture and The Nutcracker

  • @bhuapur4202 Some of the Nutcracker is on my DVD, so I won't do another video under I sell the last of those. I don't like the 1812 Overture, so I'm not likely to do it.

  • @grandma995 im with you there.... in my mind the first 3 movements are actually far better than the fourth! Its just because the 4th has the Ode to Joy, otherwise its fairly average...

  • 07:24 A bridge!

  • Everyone talks about the 4th movement of Beethoven's 9th, but to me the 3rd movement is by far the best.

  • It's all the more beautiful as he was deaf ! almost his last composition, his really success.

  • Friends just close the volume to 0 and just see those waves. I guess thats how Beethoven used to feel music. Love you maestro

  • @kimberlykuramaattori I think that you should find a new teacher.

  • worldwide flow

  • My Jazz teacher said that he has never heard the whole 3rd movement, because he will fall asleep :D

  • its like beethoven is already saying goodbye to the world in this movement...
