The start of this video shows the bolt partially open, thanks to a magazine BHO mod. To start the reload the support hand reaches over the receiver and pulls the charging handle back as the trigger finger simultaneously engages the notched safety, locking the bolt open. After a magazine swap, it's a simple drop of the safety and you are back in action.

I don't know if this is faster than other methods but I like that I can get back into my sights as I am dropping the bolt.

  • If the bolt didn't have to be moved, maybe it would be a better system. It is a very good idea though.

  • @esh325 Yeah, this setup is more of a work around than a real solution.

  • @gotagub If only the hole had been located a bit more further, you wouldn't have to move the bolt with your hand, just move the safety up. Then it would be an excellent system that would solve the reloading problem with the AK. It does leave a bit of a hole for foreign matter I suppose. Did you make this yourself? Or did you buy it?

  • @esh325 The problem with moving the notch forward is when you try to insert the new mag the back of the top bullet hits the front edge of the bolt and the mag won't seat.

  • You can actually get or make BHO mags. I know Yugoslavian mags are supposed to (usually) have BHO devices, which are awesome to pair with this.

  • i had dreams about this!

i always wanted to make some kind of a bolt catch for an AK because im using the yugo magazines that hold the bolt open on the last shot and if i could make some kind of a bolt-catch-release my reloads would be so much faster :)

its also interesting that the older Zastava M70 (yugo ak) with milled reciever had a bolt catch but unfortunatley no bolt release :/ - my friend has one and its probably a collectors item by now :)

  • @LifeisGood762 I think similar. They do have a left-hand bolt handle that only requires a top cover swap that looks pretty interesting, too. Uses FAL charging handles so you can use a folding one if you like.

  • @John234pwns That sounds interesting. I would complain about ARing an AK but it sounds like a good idea if it can be made to work.

  • whats the benefit of having this? or is it just something you wanted to try?

  • @John234pwns

    yes

  • @clap5 Yugo magazines and modified mags will cause the bolt to stay rearward until the magazine is removed. It doesn't help your reloads, but it does tell you when you're empty.

  • There's a company called "Davis Tactical Solutions" that basically has an upper receiver that uses these magazines and adds a bolt paddle to the AK. Neat product, though it's still in development.

  • @sgtking11b I am a rebel.
