read what the NIH said: "Human embryonic stem cells are thought to have much greater developmental potential than adult stem cells. This means that embryonic stem cells may be pluripotent—that is, able to give rise to cells found in all tissues of the embryo except for germ cells rather than being merely multipotent—restricted to specific subpopulations of cell types, as adult stem cells are thought to be." - I'd rather get medical advice from health professionals, not politicians!

  • Once again John Gard is only against embryonic stem-cell research, which is killing a living human embryo.

  • John Gard is not against stem-cell as a whole. He like many Republicans believe that it is very promising. They just draw the line at embryonic stem cell research. Embryonic stem-cell research is the killing of a living human embryo.

  • Oops, except Alzheimers. That's a whole brain disease - caused primarily by placques which when broken down restore brain function. A nasal spray is in the works. I suppose you think cutting out & replacing elderly gramma's whole brain a better choice, though.

  • Embryonic stem cells (ES) too dangerous for patients, no therapeutic value. They are 'to study' and to sell. (Why need human cells for preliminary research - and aren't cells w/known disease better than those at the clinics?) Patients, not gvt.,designate what to do w/embryos. All conditions mentioned already treated w/mature stem cells.

  • cliff - Let me say it again, there have been no successful proceedures derived from ESCR, TODAY. ASCR, Yep, lots. If there were any and I mean any positive results derived ESCR, they would be in all, not one, but all of the scientific journals.

One more thing...quit being rude because the US can't fund ESCR. Your turn to accomplish some research, Review the entire Dickey Amendment, to find out why.

  • "If Jesus made you broken, you should stay that way...." G. W. Bush

  • the entire issue is that it should be researched on cells that are going to be discarded anyway. And there have been successful discoveries- I want you to look up "stem cells, birth defects and the Netherlands" that is if you are smart enough to figure out how to use a search engine. I also hope your relatives get pancreatic cancer and Multiple Sclerosis and start dying and suffering- then I'd like to hear you echo this ignorant, uncaring and barbaric opinion

  • cliff - Tons of stem cell research, both Adult & Embryonic Stem Cell Research is being accomplished, daily. The only difference in the two is that ESCR is, at best, a dream of creating some cure for everything. As you yourself pointed-out...other nations are far ahead of us in ESCR, but please show me their successes! They have none.

  • Face it- more unrestricted testing needs to be done- right now other nations are far ahead of us in successful stem cell researching- mainly becuase most other countries have medical systems designed to help people instead of making profit, like our's is....which if one of the reasons Gard had his ass handed to him in the election

  • Thal - This is getting to become a broken record. But, here it goes...After 10 years of constant research, there has been no good, concrete results in Embryonic Stem Cell Research. I'm sorry, but that is the true fact. You will hear that there are promising studies, but when pinned-down they have no proof of success. Whereas, ASC Research has successes. Keep the research in ASCR to help people now.
