Organized by Free Wheels in New York City, the Bottle Beach Ride was a 12-mile trip down to Dead Horse Bay, just next to Floyd Bennett Field.
Dead Horse Bay, like our guide says, was originally a dumping ground for urban work animals. Gradually it's purpose shifted to that of a trash heap, which attracted poor immigrant communities. They would sift through the garbage looking for salvageable items to sell. The dump was closed and filled in the 1920s around Prohibition when Floyd Bennett Field, New York City's first municipal air space, was built.
However, natural erosion has resurrected much of the debris, and you can find many hidden treasures there. I found four glass bottles from the Prohibition era, which read, "FEDERAL LAW PROHIBITS SALE OR RE-USE OF THIS BOTTLE," to discourage the making of bath-tub gin.
Pretty cool! If you want to know about the next one (in April), check out http://www.bicycledefensefund.org/ or just message me.
i hear it's the place to be :)
