My kid and I were sitting at an intersection and played a game, how many ads could we count from where we were sitting? We found 64. It's easy to think we are ignoring these things but how can we ignore what is everywhere around us?

I made this vid for my Pop Anth class and here it is to share. All of the images come from TV ads, everyone. Think things have changed much about ads since the 50's? Think again.

Thanks to Dave Giles for his inspiration and to my classmates for inspired discussion. Enjoy!

  • I've never understood the instinctual fear/hatred of advertisement, commercialism, or materialism. A commercial is a service, nothing more than a medium through which to spread the word about a product or service. It does not indoctrinate you into any one school of thought, unless you are so weak-minded that you can be brainwashed by a ten-second soap ad. The public school system does much more than any advertisement firm ever could to plant ideas in our heads. Nevertheless, great video.

  • The medium is the message, my friend.

  • Although I would not elevate it to the status of fear or hatred, I can think of at least two reasons that people dislike commercialism: One reason is the blatant way that certain innapropriate products would get marketed to kids (who, many would say, ARE more succeptable) like when they would use cartoons in an add or put in some type of sickly sweet candly flavoring. The other reason is the sheer number of adds that people get bombarded with on a daily basis.Ireadan interestingarticle onthis...

  • Its funny, I think a ton of people know this song based on the intro, but don't know the lyrics or the name.

  • The ads are amazingly mixed!!

  • You're a genius!

  • The idea of commercials selling body image or promising that buying their product will bring you whatever form of happiness (family, beauty, sex, etc) is one that has become so cliched that it has extended into hyperbole in many commercials. Axe body spray comes to mind as an example, or the Old Spice one with LLCoolJ (wow, blast from the past there). As an aside have you seen Gem's space video of this song? Sex sells.

    Drink clean water.
