  • how is it not composed as well as 4 or 1?

I'll admit. 4 is definitely the most difficult and emotional of the ballades, a true virtuosic piece. but 3 is certainly harder than 2 or 1.

  • Wow , Rubinstein plays my favorite Chopin Ballade , it's such a cheerful and emotional piece , love to study this ,not perfect , lol !

    Rubinstein is amazing, thanks !

  • @metalfactory50 The only difference I hear is Rubinstein's is more tacky.. Zimerman's just sounds more 'perfect'.

  • One of my audition pieces for Juilliard... Love this one... love Rubenstein! He was my role model growing up :)

  • @etawakimasi Ballade no.3 is in ATCL, while no. 1,2 & 4 are in LTCL. (Trinity)

  • @tchykovsky That's exactly what makes the first ballade so chilling to me, though. It becomes, I would call it hysterical, in its final sections.

  • @MrChopinb For example, I've heard that Rubinstein made mistakes often but he was excellent at getting out of it. I think it happened here too and in my opinion it sounded even better than the original. It's from 5:30 - 5:40... Listen to the same part when Zimmerman played it and you will see my point.

  • Ok, I prefer Zimerman, how is Rubinstein better than him? Just curious, and Rubinstein is still amazing! :)

  • The most wonderful, gifted pianist of our time.. or any other, imo. I played this piece when I auditioned for Juilliard and studied him playing it for a year beforehand. Needless to say, it went well :-)

  • In terms of interpretive difficulty, I put my hat to the fourth and third ballades. They are definitely what I consider more "mature." The transition from beginning to end are very fluid compared to the first two ballades, where for some odd reason, Chopin breaks into a dance or fury of anger unexpectedly (almost bi-polar). Less of that for 3 and 4, also more interpretive freedom, I consider the latter to be "well-written."

  • woooooooowwww!!!

  • I think that maybe the third ballade is easier technically than the others, but this piece has an emocional content, a development of the themes, and so beatiful harmonic colour... I just love it.
