@strafefire Also, it is untrue that the Gracies used to train in Mehdis school to hone their ground game. Not only there was no student there on top ground level by that time, but Sensei Mehdi hated (and hates) the Gracie Family, with whom he trained for several years before returning to traditional japanese Judo. Mehdi is a superb teacher and many jiu-jitsu guys used to train there to improve their stand-up game, no more no less.
@strafefire Actually that is not the case. Although I cant recall where he trained, I can ascertain you that the only way for one to compete in a Brazilian National or any other championship organized by the Brazilian Federation is to present an statement signed by an certified instructor, besides being federated.
Actually Flavio Canto has a black belt in Jiu Jitsu and also won a Brazilian National in the Purple Belt, as far as I know. He has always trained both Jiu Jitsu and Judo, but chose to focus more on Judo in order to achieve his dream of winning an Olympic Game
Yeah, maybe because he had just f'ing won the Mundials. Have you ever competed in a tourney? A week of recovery at least for one that big. Not saying Canto isn't good, but none of these are indicators on how he'd do in a BJJ tournament. A lot of guys pull guard on dominant Judoka so they don't even get their outright advantage.

@TAEKWON21 yes, he trained @ Alliance gym for a good time. It does not mean he learned his newaza there, so Judo fans: don't be so insecure...

He has no formal training in BJJ. Even he says so himself. If anybody can provide evidence to the contrary then lets see it.

A great clip of Flavio Canto a few years ago but great arm bar. At the moment he's the best at mixing bjj and Judo

@musicologo123 Canto has an HONORARY Black Belt in BJJ.
He has never truly formerly trained in BJJ.
His school, the Mehdi Judo school in Rio is one of the few Judo schools left in the world that teaches TRUE newaza/ground fighting.
Mehdi Judo school is so good that Helio and Carlos sent all of their sons there to get their Judo training and hone their Ground Fighting techniques
