An interesting documentary on the way of the geisha: A young woman from Northern Japan has decided to quit school and move to Gion, the geisha quarter of Kyoto. There she wants to fulfill her dream of becoming a Geisha, called Geiko in Kyoto. First she has to go through a trial period of several months and only after passing an exam is she formally accepted as an apprentice Geisha, called Maiko.

I'm not sure if this is her name but the young lady the documentary is following, Niki (?)...I wonder how she departed from her family. How did she tell them she was going to drop out of school to become a geisha?
Some women faked being Geisha and were prostitutes, but real Geisha are not. They are "artists," and professional hostess. They dance, paint, play music, perform, host high-scale parties, and hold to ancient traditions. Its more a lifestyle than a job.
She's not retired, but I think she's still a maiko. You don't become a geisha until after something called an erikae, and I don't think she's had hers yet.
