I began soroban about 2 1/2 months ago in lieu of cubing. I've been trying to decrease the amount I cube and replace it with something that's not as dangerous to my elbow. (I got cubital tunnel from cubing, and no, the names are not related...)

This was an interesting angle to record from, and it was the best I could do anyway. You get to see my new imaginary abacus... Can you see it... CAN YOU???

I got the sheets from http://www.uitti.net/stephen/soroban/links.shtml, and I got the soroban from http://www.soroban.com/

The one i'm using is a 23-digit soroban. it was 11000 yen ($119.405) and it was worth every penny, except when i bought it about a year ago, i coulda sworn 11000 yen was about $80, not $119.

I learned how to use the abacus from http://webhome.idirect.com/~totton/abacus/

  • You appear to be doing quite well for 2.5 months. I don't have 3 hours a day anymore either. At my age, it'd probably take longer, if it's possible at all.

  • @t3601su i gotta get off of work before i can attempt this though. good thing i'm off work at the end of this week!

i woulda posted some addition stuff, but I haven't had anyone to hold my digital camera. For these, when there's no abacus, there's no point in having someone hold it, so it was fine just setting it on the table.

Plus I need to show that I've cut my hair since then. I got tired of the maintenance of long hair.

  • I'm trying to learn how to do this too. I have only had my abacus for about 2 weeks but I hope to get good enough so that I can calculate quicker. Thanks for sharing your video.

  • @Istillhavejoy i know i posted this about a year ago, but i'm gonna get back into it this summer, and i'm gonna start teaching elementary school kids too. gonna be INTENSE.

  • @DaKrazedKyubizt I think that kids would greatly benefit from this in the US. I know I would have. If you come across any great helpful websites (other than the one mentioned--- which Ive been to) let me know.

  • @Istillhavejoy k. just gimme a week or so to run into some. i'm gonna be really busy for quite a while, running all over the place. i'll probably end up losing a few pounds after all these errands.

  • I've got a tiny tripod that i got at the dollar store. It stands maybe 4 inches tall. But it's enough to hold a small camera on a desk or something. That or bits of string shouldn't break the budget. I run Linux. kino (i think) can help you edit your videos for free.

  • @t3601su

3 months, 3 hours a day... idk if i'd have time for that, considering school, but that i could maybe try for the next month. i do learn fast, and that sounds like a worthy challenge if it got you as far as it did in 3 months.
