Hello on this Thursday, October 11, 2007. I'm Kristin Volk with a UPI top news update.

Turkey is angrily reacting to a House committee vote that recognizes the mass killings of Armenians (ar-mean-ians) during World War One as genocide. That country's president, Abdullah Gul, says the bill could cause serious problems for relations between the U.S. and Turkey. Yesterday's vote was the first step towards a full House vote, despite opposition from President Bush. The resolution says the deportation of nearly two million Armenians from the Ottoman Empire between 1915 and 1923, in which 1 and a half million of them died, was deliberate and systematic.

The number of foreclosures across the country last month dropped. A survey shows that foreclosures fell 8 percent from a 32-month high in August. But September's figures were still double the number reported a year ago. States in the upper Midwest, south and Southwest continued to dominate foreclosure filings.

Al Gore supporters are stepping up their efforts to persuade the former vice president to jump into the presidential race. Draftgore.com published an ad in the New York Times yesterday, urging that the 2000 Democratic Presidential nominee throw his hat into the ring. This comes as Gore's expected to find out tomorrow if he's won the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to educate others about global warming. Gore continues to say he has no plans to run for president again.

A top Marine is suggesting that the Marine Corps be the prime force in Afghanistan and reduce its number in Iraq. General James Conway is reportedly calling for the Army to take the lead in Iraq. Such a shift in policy would require the approval of the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and Defense Secretary Gates. Meanwhile, two coalition soldiers were killed and 38 others were wounded in an attack on a large U.S. military base near Baghdad's airport.

That's all for now. Be sure to check out our abandoned babies series on upi.com today. Thanks for watching.

  • why this anger? Extremism is not a solution. There was a time when most powerful countries attacked Turkey and at the and Turks had their freedom. There is no nation in the world got such suffer and left alone like Turks but they worked it hard and kept their land as theirs. And today their land is the most hospital and welcome place and open to all visitors. Welcome-Dobro Doshli-Hosgeldiniz to Turkiye.

  • Guys I've a better solution for this debates. Can't we just forget everything happened in the past and start to live peacefully in the world? Certainly some people killed each other from every nationality. Some of them for religioun, natioanalistic reasons some of them due to an anger and hate maybe some of them for fun.

But it shouldn't be very hard to open a white clean notebook and keep the peace in the world. God (Allah) created all of us equally and everybody deserves to live happily.
