Early in 2003, a severe situation developed at the Los Angeles Opera. Not only was the conductor of the original opera planned for January (Monteverdi's "The Coronation of Poppea") incapacitated, but Placido Domingo who was to star in 2/3 of the hastily assembled replacement (the 3rd & 4th acts of "Werther" & the last act of "Otello) had a bronchial infection and could not sing. He asked Roberto Alagna to stand in for him, and so, with only 2 weeks notice & 2 days of rehearsal, and never having sung Otello before, Roberto stepped into those roles and Placido conducted the orchestra.
While commenting on the standing ovations for both "Werther" & "Otello", one reviewer observed of the Otello - "Alagna's voice gave the character a powerful, dangerous personality and it soared through the hall, clean and clear and accurate..."
Here is a recording from later in 2003 of Otello's last aria - The words from Shakespeare - "I kissed thee 'ere I killed thee, none but this, killing myself, to die upon a kiss..." The slideshow is of RA in that production of Otello, as well as in Romeo & Juliette, Carmen (2004 Orange), Lucie di Lammermoor,, La Boheme, Don Carlos, Rigoletto, La Traviata, Lucia di Lammermor, Il Trovatore, Carmen (The Met 2010), Carmen (Berlin 2010), Cavalleria Rusticana, Aida, Manon, Tosca, Tales of Hoffman, Carmen (ROH 2009),...

  • Placido was going to ,sing in the replacement for the original opera, which included the last act of "Otello" not the entire opera. However, he got a bronchial infection and couldn't sing - I couldn't say that he never sang "Otello" again, since I don't know. I do know that Roberto Alagna has said that he will sing "Otello" in 2011...

  • I don`t understand .You say that Placido should sing, and one other video here on youtube was Scala 2001 and they said that was last Domingo`s Otello.Who is right?

  • Phenomenal!! I agree with ximenadore - "Only Roberto Alagna"!!
