In my opinion, one of the most exciting bowlers to watch was John Gant. He was the PBA rookie of the year in 1984. I recall he had some success out on tour through the late 80s before giving it all up to be with his family. After a 6 year layoff, In 1995, Gant came back on tour, and in order to re-qualify for the Tournament of Champions, he needed to win. On March 11, 1995, he qualified 4th in the Johnny Petraglia Open, and marched through the field winning 4 matches to capture his 3rd PBA title. In the reactive resin era, his ball hit harder than anyone I can remember. Even in the urethane era, his ball hit hard! Gant ended up winning 4 titles in his PBA career, with his last being the Tournament of Champions in 1997. The following clip is each of his 10 frames in the championship match from that day, knocking off Ken McNeely, 234-216. I hope that you enjoy watching John Gant:

  • Very powerful and consistent style. Great balance. I always enjoy your postings. Thank you :-)

  • Thanks for the kind words. I reposted this, because Ryan Ciminelli reminds me of Gant!

  • The Buzzsaw himself. I miss watching him bowl.

  • @mrbowling300 sorry, but ciminelli is weaksauce compared to gant

  • I also bowled with Ken Mcneely about 2 years ago in the same center during a marathon tournament. He was telling me he had a lot of wrist problems and surgery. He does not throw the ball as well as he threw it back in 1995.

  • I was watching Gant bowl the first round of match play on Thursday night this tournament and he was sending pins all OVER the place. It was incredible to watch. I don't believe he used the Cuda during the week though, from what I remember the ball was black but I couldnt' tell you what it was.

  • that has some serious drive for 95!

  • Wow that ball does hit hard!

  • Geez was thinking the same the other night too about Ciminelli

  • @mrbowling300 That's an interesting point, I hadn't thought of that. Maybe Ciminelli has more revs? I don't know, but that's a great observation, about how much they are alike.
