    It's just a fixed hand hold, he grabs it to steady himself while snapping in and out of rolls and to pull himself back up into the seat after high Gs.

    He probably doesn't, but in an environment like a demo, where he knows what maneuver he's doing and when, it's probably more comfortable for him to be able to brace himself... saves some some jostling around the cockpit.
