  • Somebody clue me in please!!! I'm only 29 years old, so were The Sylvers popular in the 1970's? If so why are they not mentioned along with The Jacksons and other groups of the 70's?. This cat sounds like Micheal Jackson...not original.

  • They were very popular in the mid 70's. However they were performing since the 60's but didnt get signed to a mjor label like MGM until early 70's.

There were alot of youthful and family groups around that time. Curtis Mayfield worked wih the Stairsteps, Jerry Butler with the Sylvers and of course Diana Ross and other motown acts for the Jackson 5.

Foster solo came out in "73" and he was younger than MJ.

  • Also you have Leon Sylvers III who wrote alot of material duing their early years. MGM allow them to be themselves. When they went to Capitol(who was poor at promoting black artists)change their format to a more pop oriented sound. Now the Jackson had Berry Gordy and his motown money to put them over most family acts that came from that era.

  • oh but for the record, Diana Ross never discovered the J5.

  • Yeah thats true but thats how he use them publicity wise for Diana and J5 career.

  • The Jackson didnt have their own say so in the begining of their careers. The Sylvers held their own for awhile. Leon Sylvers III is responsible for a lot of SOLAR artists hits and early-mid 80's r&b music emergence.

  • Lets not compare the Sylvers to The Jacksons anymore.Their more like a cross between The 5 Stairsteps, The 5th Dimension, and Friends Of Distinction.Their was a whole lot of family bands back in the days. But i can say one thing Leon really played the bass on the albums and wrote the songs from the beginning.Sorry Jermaine...

  • GLADYS NIGHT DISCOVERED THE JACKSON 5

  • Foster Sylvers also wrote a song for Janet Jackson. Come give your love to me... By the way who discovered the jackson's?

  • This is awesome with his cute litttle self

  • @Belburg I tried looking but I only saw 3 links and they were Wikipedia articles. Do you think you could send me a link?

  • @Aariyan096 I think on the Foster Sylvers Facebook Page there is a picture of Michael with his arm around Foster, probably around the time of 1976-1978, judging from Michael's fro.

  • Foster actually sounds more like his late brother Edmund Sylvers in his early records than Michael... his voice got deeper later...

  • Im tired of people saying Foster was imitating Micheal how do you guys expect a preadolescent male voice to sound. its gonna be high and squeeky whether it was Foster Micheal Ralph or my brother John lol!!
