On Monday 02.01.2010, a group of paramotor pilots ventured out into the Glamis, CA sand dunes for some fun.

Jeff Hamann (red wing), Russ Bateman (blue wing), Phil Russman (yellow wing), Scott Johnson (also yellow wing) and myself had a blast foot-dragging the dunes and chasing some dune buggies around through the sand.

At 3:51 into the video, Phil got too close and "hit" the dune. There is a very dangerous optical illusion in the dunes where the surface is entirely smooth...you have no depth perception. It is just like flying just above the surface of perfectly glassy water.

This was shot with a Sony CX 520v HD video camera mounted on my helmet, with an eyepiece to monitor the live action...

These are long sequences because I quickly threw something together for Russ (from Utah).

Enjoy.

  • The camera is mounted on my helmet which reduces the vibration. I am monitoring the view with an eyepiece that is not mfg anymore...but there are others.
