John Bergman, drama therapist and director

John Bergman is the founder and Director of Stonewall Arts Project, Inc. and Geese Theatre Company USA, as well as a founder/teacher of Geese Company UK, and Transcena (Romania). Geese Theatre has provided performances, workshops and training exclusively to prison populations. He is an internationally renowned theatre director and trainer with 25 years experience in creating theatre in and with the criminal justice system, supporting staff in humane interactions with prisoners, setting up and delivering therapeutic and theatre based programming, creating original criminal justice staffed educational theatre productions and consulting to the criminal justice systems on treatment delivery, staff training and ethical behavior. Bergman and his companies have created over thirty theatre performances within and touring to prisons around the world. He has worked in 45 states in the USA, as well as internationally in Brazil, UK, New Zealand, Australia, Romania, Bulgaria and Croatia. Currently Bergman splits his work between staff development, drama therapy based ethics training for commissioners and administrators, training officers to work therapeutically with violent offenders, creating original theatre works with offenders and community members and working as a drama therapist with violent and sexual offenders. John is currently on the Expressive Therapy Faculty at Lelsey University in Cambridge, MA.




John Bergman was a guest speaker during the summer of 2011, and also led a workshop in improvisation with our playwrights. He will return as visiting faculty in 2013 to teach courses in Theatre for Special Populations and Theatre Elements for Playwrights covering basic concepts of acting and directing.
