President Ezra Taft Benson, an Apostle of Jesus Christ as well as the Prophet of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints for a time (1985-1994), was also an astute government servant, having served in the Eisenhower Administration as Secretary of Agriculture in 1952-1960. He became President of the Quorum of 12 Apostles in 1973. In this 1977 speech, he speaks prophetically about Socialism, its evils, and why charity can't be forced. His viewpoints are powerful and compelling, and it sounds as if he is contemporarily PRESENT with today's issues, even though he was prophetically speaking about it over three decades ago. Amazing.
President Benson emphasized the importance of reading the Book of Mormon, missionary work, and strengthening families.

  • mormonanswerman I love this video and have shared it with my family, very interesting and timely. Where can I find the transcript from this specific talk by Ezra Taft Benson? Can it be found on the lds website? I have had some trouble locating it. Thanks for the great contribution to YouTube.

  • @parkifer Hey there! Pres. Benson was an awesome prophet and participant in the government sector as well. I don't know exactly where you can find this talk, but it was in the 70's, and you could google some of the key phrases in it, and it will pop up somewhere.

  • I live in Australia and we have a "socialized health care" system, as does every other rich country. And guess what? We aren't a communist country. We haven't turned into a Stalinist pariah state. I think you guys are overreacting and, quite frankly, bringing religion into the debate is quite unsavoury. Might I remind you that there are liberal Mormons, like them or not.

  • @canterdogs a liberal mormon is what? One that is OK with socialism/communism?

The USA is not a communist country, and we just passed it to. Its what it leads to. If you are not communist now, you will be after some time and after the system implodes from the burden of debt. That's when drastic forms of changes will come and liberties would be lost.

  • We have had a government healthcare option for over 3 decades. Even the conservatives dare not dismantle it. And private options are subsidised by the fed govt. Australia has a good mix of govt and market economy, that withstood the excesses resulting from the GFC that was started on Wall Street under the watch of libertarian Greenspan, and the anti-regulation Bush admin. In Oz our banks were well regulated and so they were solvent during the worst times. No bail outs needed here.

  • @canterdogs You never know when things are going to fail or not, but that to me is not the measure of its success. The main thing for me is FREEDOM. When we are compelled to do something and it is enforced by the rule of government, that's when our freedoms are lost. Some people are OK with that, but I am not.

  • I love Ezra Taft Benson. Surely a prophet of God and a visionary on personal liberties.

  • @madeleinekay Hi Madeline!

I tend to think that this vid is primarily for members of the Church who believe in prophets already, because in my experience, there are several members of the Church who believe in government assistance, welfare, socialism, etc., and they don't seem to grasp that charity is to be a voluntary act to be charity. And if someone is forced to do good, then it is evil. I know that's strong, but the Book of Mormon says this:

  • Awesome!!! Thanks for posting.

  • We have been warned by wise men since the 1970's about this calamity we are now it. We still have precious little time to stop the fiscal destruction of the USA!

  • I understand where ur coming from. But Obama's health plans were out there during the election. the American people had the freedom to either elect him or McCain. They chose overwhelmingly to support Obama. If the majority have voted for such reforms then it is incumbent on the administration to deliver on their promises. Might I also add that the Health care bill passed in the US is almost exactly the same as the one Mitt Romney proposed.

  • @dantej32 This talk is from the 70's.

Sure Jesus Christ was a benevolent person, but socialist is the wrong term, because socialism by definition needs an ALL POWERFUL STATE to enforce it. That's what is wrong with it. It required compulsion, it requires force and punishment for those that don't pay up their taxes.

Jesus Christ required no tax, but a tithe, and if you didn't pay a tithe there is no punishment NOW, but at judgment day. Its way different!
