Picture Stories for ESL (TESOL)

Antonio Graceffo uses ALG, Automatic Language Growth theory, to teach English in Taiwan. ALG is a listening based second language acquisition theory developed by Dr. J. Marvin Brown, an American Linguist. The method is currently being employed in Bangkok, where David Long heads a Thai language program, while furthering ALG research and development. Antonio studied ALG with David Long and is expanding its use for EFL, TESOL, and ESL.

Oh. Right I see now. I didn't know that the lesson was rushed. That explains a lot. I have used picture stories before in my teaching as well, althouigh not through the ALG or AUA methods. I do find them to work very well.

@aridion1 This lesson was just a quick demo for teachers. but if you check my channel or search ESL picture stories, you will find actual lessons i did with my students and i generally don't coach them at all. they just talk their way through the story. On youtube i have a picture story for Mulan and a few others. I would appreciate it if you commented on one of them.

What? The Teacher just basically dragged the student to a conclusion without the student learning Absolutely anything. What was the point in this exercise? This Teacher definately confinces me in either of 2 things, namely, that ALG doesn't work or, that he as teacher was very poor and failed to demonstrate any patience as a good teacher. I have an MA Applied Linguistics and TESOL. This was not a good lesson, too rushed and the student was not let demonstrate what he took out of this.

@aridion1 I agree, the lesson was rushed. This was a demonstration and the time allotted was cut from thirty minutes to ten. But the idea was to demonstrate this single technique of picture stories. As much as we hope to allow the students freedom to find their own expression, the teacher sometimes needs to help, or lead the student through the story. In subsequent lessons, hopefully, the student would learn to do it for himself. You have a number of spelling and grammar errors in your comment.

I am really interested in new teachniques in teaching English as a Second Language. It is good that you posted some examples on the net. This should help other teachers and also give them alternative ideas and techniques when teaching. All The best. p.s I liked your martial arts videos as well. @aridion1 I learned most if not all my English through listening and understandable experiences, these things that make up the core of the ALG theory. Back then I didn't even know I was going to acquire English to such a level that I'm on at the moment. I didn't know about ALG either. But looking back at it now, it all makes sense and it DOES indeed work. So don't brag about your credentials and jump into conclusions, when your English itself still needs more improvement.
