PonyChat Network - Connecting Users (2011-09-29 through 2011-11-23)

This is a map of the connections to the PonyChat IRC Network (http://ponychat.net/) from August 29, 2011 until November 22, 2011. All times are UTC.

The positions of the dots on the map are, in most cases, very approximate. The coordinates are obtained from MaxMind's free city IP geolocation database, which does not include all IPs and is not very precise for many that it does include.

The map image itself is an equidistant projection. Unfortunately, it looks like some parts of the map do not perfectly line up with my generated data (the dots on the east US coast never quite touch the coast). I'll look at that more closely as the generator is improved.

Based on some guessing while I watched the statistics shown by the script that I wrote to make this, I'd say that at any time, between 50 and 90% of the users on the network are mapped here. The others are either incorrectly flattened to the center of their country or not included at all. This is a limitation of using the free database.
