The first movement, Adagio, of Bernhard Joachim Hagen's Sonata in D Minor. Writing at the time of C.P.E Bach and the young Haydn, Hagen incorporated the proto-romantic styles of Empfindsamkeit and Sturm und Drang in his lute music. These artistic movements are built around dramatic changes of character achieved via sudden contrasts of tempo, dynamics, tone color and articulation.
