The Detroit Red Wings and the Colorado Avalanche met at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, MI for a regular season game. This game turned into a classic when it erupted into a brawl that even involved two hall of fame goaltenders. The focal point of this battle, however, was the retribution given to Claude Lemieux by Darren McCarty for Lemieux's cheap shot on Kris Draper in game 6 of the Western Conference Finals in 1996.
It is thought that this night bonded the Red Wings together enough for their run to the Stanley Cup in 1997, their first since 1955.
It was a momentous night in Hockeytown.

@campion04 I would say the Boston and Vancouver rivalry is in the same league. The problem is that they don't play one another that often.
The highest level of competition brings out rivalries, and until the Avs are on the upswing, it won't come back.

@campion04 im from chicago and i agree the hawks fan's HATE the cunucks, i would like to see a brawl like this for them i personally dont like the cunucks but i dont mind the sedins,kesler, and luongo. every1 says sedin sisters but in my head theyre preey good

Watching this in 2011. Hockey was blessed to have had such a great rivalry. Nothing today compares. What I wouldn't give to see my Canucks and Hawks go nutty like this.
