NEW YORK -- Keith Olbermann is leaving MSNBC and has announced that Friday's "Countdown" show will be his last.

MSNBC issued a statement Friday that it had ended its contract with the the controversial host, with no further explanation. Olbermann hosted the network's top-rated show, but his combative liberal opinions often made him a target of critics.

Olbermann did not say why he was leaving.

He was suspended without pay from the network for two days in November for donating to three Democratic candidates, which violated NBC News' policy on political donations.

Olbermann complained that he was being punished for mistakenly violating an inconsistently applied rule that he had known nothing about.

The host apologized to fans -- but not to the network.

  • I no longer have reason to watch news. Racist Fox and phony CNN are jokes. keith was my reason for watching politics and without Keith the network that shows lock up raw mararthons and dateline rape traps will officially be the new cartoon network. With keith liberals are finished. He's all we had left. After Tim Russert died keith stepped us and should have been given Tim's show. MSNBC and Rachel, Lawrence kick rocks. You have lost many followers. Bad ratings and failure await you. Enjoy.

  • @BigBriggsFan Bad ratings and failure await you? Where have you been? MSLSD's ratings were nothing before and their even worse than nothing now. Saying olbermann was a ratings success was like saying he was the tallest midget in the room. Fox News had better ratings every hour on the hour than CNN and mslsd put together when olbermann was at his best. Bad Ratings and failure await you? No. More failure and worse ratings await them.

  • Keith is back! Welcome back Keith! And good riddance to the racist, fascist glenn beck! He got caught in so many lies even the Fox Ministry of Propaganda couldn't afford to keep him they were losing so many sponsors bwahahahahahahah!

  • @BigBriggsFan hey man how does keiths dick taste?

  • who even watched this guy anyway??? msnbc's rating are awful more people watch re runs of barney

  • Now what do I do for comedy? no more meltdown ?

  • Finally. The hate monger departs.Maybe MSNBC viewship will improve.Still not close to those on Fox.

  • Bye bye Overbite, you blow bag democRAT !! Gore's delusional network will be a good fit for you and your 375.000 viewers .

  • @BigBriggsFan If Olbermann had been given "Meet the Press"-it would have been a disgrace-everybody knows the game now-there is no such thing as unbiased" Cable News"All you had to do was watch olbermann go after Scott Brown to know he was no journalist and had no respect for the concept of unbiased reporting. That being said--even though I thought Keith was a smug, intellectually dishonest ,elitist egomaniac--it's always good to have a counterbalance in views-it's sad when ANY voice is silenced

  • @mysticman07 I am helping this country by listening to Fox.......Thank you very much! It sure beats the hell out of listening to those sniveling, crybabies over at MSNBC.

  • And nothing of value was lost
