Sure Jhon has a lot more technic, chops than Santana. And he is very musical in it's application. Like him a lot. Santana still is one of my favorite guitar player. he gets dissed for going main stream, but he still does deliver magical moments. To me it really does not matter if you can do it with few notes or 10.000 notes,whatever takes you to the realm of musical bliss it all good to me.

It's just a phrase, meaning if you play improvised jazz guitar you would do yourself a great service by studying what john is doing here.
