"Rip Van Winkle" is a short story by the American author Washington Irving published in 1819, as well as the name of the story's fictional protagonist. Written while Irving was living in Birmingham, England, it was part of a collection entitled The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon. Although the story is set in New York's Catskill Mountains, Irving later admitted, "When I wrote the story, I had never been on the Catskills."
The story of Rip Van Winkle is set in the years before and after the American Revolutionary War. Rip Van Winkle, a villager of Dutch descent, lives in a nice village at the foot of New York's Catskill Mountains. An amiable man whose home and farm suffer from his lazy neglect, he is loved by all but his wife.
One autumn day he escapes his nagging wife by wandering up the mountains. There he encounters strangely dressed men, rumored to be the ghosts of Henry Hudson's crew, who are playing nine-pins. After drinking some of their liquor, he settles down under a shady tree and falls asleep. He wakes and returns to his village, where he finds twenty years have passed. He finds out that his wife has died and that his close friends have died in a war or gone somewhere else. He immediately gets into trouble when he proclaims himself a loyal subject of King George III, not knowing that the American Revolution has taken place.
An old local recognizes him, however, and Rip's now grown daughter takes him in. Rip resumes his habitual idleness, and his tale is solemnly believed by the old Dutch settlers, with certain hen-pecked husbands wishing they shared Rip's good luck.

La storia di Rip van Winkle è ambientata immediatamente prima (intorno al 1770) e dopo la rivoluzione americana (intorno al 1790). Rip van Winkle,un abitante di origine olandese, viveva in un bel villaggio ai piedi delle Catskill Mountains di New York. Essendo affabile era amato da tutti tranne che dalla moglie. Infatti oltre ad essere affabile era anche pigro e così trascurava casa sua e la sua fattoria. Un giorno autunnale scappò dai continui rimproveri della moglie, fuggendo sulle montagne. Dopo aver incontrato degli uomini vestiti in maniera strana, che si dice siano i fantasmi dell'equipaggio di Henry Hudson, che giocavano a nine-pins, e dopo aver bevuto dei loro superalcolici egli si sedette a terra sotto un albero ombreggiante e cadde addormentato. Dopo vent'anni si svegliò e ritornò nel suo villaggio,inconsapevole di quanto aveva dormito. Arrivato scoprì che la moglie era morta e i suoi amici più vicini erano morti in guerra o andati da qualche altra parte. Immediatamente si mise nei guai dichiarandosi un fedele suddito di Re Giorgio III, non sapendo che nel frattempo la Rivoluzione Americana aveva reso l'America indipendente dall'Inghilterra. Un vecchio del posto lo riconobbe, comunque, e la figlia ormai adulta di Rip gli diede ospitalità. Quando Rip riprese le sue abitudini pigre, nel villaggio, visto che la sua storia venne ritenuta vera dai vecchi coloni olandesi, alcuni mariti scontenti del trattamento ricevuto dalle proprie mogli iniziarono a desiderare di avere la sua stessa sorte.
'Uno che ha avuto grandissima influenza su di me è stato Arthur Rackham: pittore che dovrà avere, secondo me, una rivalutazione quanto prima. Un grande artista il quale ha eseguito i suoi migliori disegni per il 'Rip Van Winkle' e per il 'Sogno di una Notte di Mezza Estate'. (Dino Buzzati)
