Canyonlands National Park contains some of the oldest artworks in America. They consist of petroglyphs and pictographs incised and painted on rock walls displayed for hundreds and in some cases, thousands of years. Through spectral photography, Bud Turner is able to reveal elements of this ancient artwork, aiding in their preservation and restoration. This ongoing project is made possible through Canyonlands Natural History Associaiton's Discovery Pool.

  • Kudos to CNHA and Bud turner for helping to preserve and extend our knowledge of the information in the unique rock art in Canyonlands. These "paintings" by the ancient people who somehow wrested a living in these desert canyons are unfortunately said to be beginning to degrade at a faster rate for unknown reasons. Thanks so much for doing this project. Because once the information the pictographs contain is gone, it (along with their beauty) is lost forever.
