I've been hearing joke since the 1970s and it may date all the way back to the 1940s. This is the best version of the joke I've seen so far. And I noticed that it looked like a British destroyer too, but I just overlooked it for the purpose of the joke.

OF course I Doubt something like this ever happened. Most lighthouse today are automated and unmanned. Plus if manned, would they have radar or even monitor radio.
Would be funnier with a lightship - if you know what that was.
