One of Sill's most acclaimed portrayals was as Queen Elizabeth 1 in Donizetti's intensely dramatic opera about Elizabeth and Essex. Maestro Julius Rudel is the conductor of this live production, devised and directed by Tito Capobianco. An essential addition to every opera lover's video library.

  • I saw this perfomance when it was first telecast during the 1970's. I now own the dvd of the production. I thought then, and I think now, that it is the greatest operatic perfomance by a soprano that I have ever seen. Sills is brilliant in the role. Her singing is magnificent and her acting is superb. She owns this role.

  • How can somebody dislike Sills?!!!!!!!!!!!!! She is just PERFECT!!!! My GOD!!!

  • Maybe not a voice of utmost beauty, but its expressiveness and strength! Sounds familiar?

  • Thanks for choosing to upload... we can all enjoy!

  • My god -- does she not only sing it with incredible meaning and anguish but she acts the heck out of it as well. Absolutely stunning.

  • Class dismissed!

  • I prefer Raina Kabaivanska and The Absolute Queen Elisabeth II Leyla Gencer!!!

  • I am so glad I looked this up. I heard her sing it live and I was still sitting in my seat at the end unable to move when almost everyone else had left the theater. Tears filled my eyes now as they did then. I have not heard this since that time. Thanks for posting!

  • @andrecooper555 I'm amazed, it only took you zillions of posts to realize your not an interlocutor worthy of me! Apply your latter post hateful words to yourself while you look at the mirror and you'll be coherent once in your lifetime. Hahaha!

  • @andrecooper555 Your friends should have spoken to you about your rude and tedious need to be right (even when you aren’t), and your penchant for giving criticism even though you are unable to accept criticism—even when it is the exact criticism that you levied. I can only hope that one day your inner beauty will exceed your outer beauty and your intelligence. Your pettiness and small mindedness have amused me long enough. Hasta nunca.
