I used to always think this was Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young for the longest time...when I used to listen to the classic rock station a lot, it's funny when I am older how much I know more about bands then i used to, wow i want to see this band in concert live sometime!!!! sweet! ;0)

Aligator Lizards are native to southern California. When they run fast and leap it looks like they are flying. Some people also think looking up at shapes in the clouds may have inspired the line.
Only song writers know what really did inspire a particular lyric. It's very likely they got to see real aligator lizards leaping through the air while living in California.
