Contrary to popular belief, this song was written in 1957 by Ewan MacColl for his wife, Peggy Sue. It was popularised by Roberta Flack, after appearing in the film 'Play Misty For Me', and topped the Billboard 100 in 1972 - retaining the top spot for six weeks, aswell as winning the Grammy Award for 'Song of the Year' three years later. A well deserved award.

I Don't say this lightly, due to absolutes being so over used. But Roberta flack has the greatest female voice ever. So beautiful..and this from a 6'5" 245 pound tough guy. Shes amazing.

I have loved this song since the first time I heard it on the radio, riding in my parent's car. It feels like it puts me in another dimension every time I hear it. I have to stop what I'm doing and just close my eyes and listen. Her voice is so incredible.
