Yad Vashem, literally meaning A Hand and a Name, is Israels official memorial to the 6 million Jews killed in the Holocaust by the Nazi Regime from 1939-1945 during the Second World War. Located at the foot of Mount Herzl in Jerusalem, Yad Vashem is a large complex containing a history museum, memorial chambers, art galleries, archives, outdoor commemorative sites such as the Valley of the Destroyed Communities, a synagogue, and an educational centre. Non-Jews who saved Jews during the Holocaust, often at great personal risk, are honored by Yad Vashem as the "Righteous Among the Nations."
The Childrens Memorial, featured here at SL Israel, is hollowed out from an underground cavern, and is a tribute to the approximately 1.5 million Jewish children who perished during the Holocaust.
Memorial candles, a customary Jewish tradition to remember the dead, are reflected infinitely in a dark and somber space, creating the impression of millions of stars shining in the firmament. The only sound heard is a voice reading out the names of murdered children, their ages and their countries of origin.
