As I mentioned in the description of another video, I adore Millay. This is one of her more popular sonnets. Millay had a lot of pride, and in many of her poems, she writes about love with feigned indifference-- the reader can guess that she's feeling a great deal, but she's too proud to admit it. So when I recorded this video, I tried to convey a kind of repressed hurt--the kind of disorientation we feel when our heart's been broken, the disbelief.
@horseluver4life13 Thank you so much! Yeah, I've watched quite a few versions on youtube that seemed completely wrong to me. I think that Millay's poetry is passionate but somehow subtle at the same time. I imagine that she would want this poem read with an attempt at control, with moments of overwhelming emotion. Good luck at the competition! I'm sure that you'll be lovely!
