  • NO! That's wrong. Woo Deep. lolx (I'm a native Chinese speaker, so I would know.) It should be specifically HU DIE

  • @mungobree

I'll answer you're question. The "sounding" part serves the role as a guidance for pronunciation. The sounding part of Hu and Die DO NOT mean anything in 蝴蝶. It's just used to make up the sound.

  • Interesting!

In japanese they use just the second character 蝶, pronounced chou (cho).

    in Portuguese, 蝴蝶 = borboleta

  • Dear Haiying, I have a question.

In the first character hú , I see, like you said, the radical for insect. And in the "sounding part" I recognize the character for "old" and "moon"...do those two characters then not contribute to the meaning at all? Just wondering:)
