CATASTROPHE! anarchists riot in New York... again

CATASTROPHE! Cats gone wild in New York City! A large group of anarchist youth took the streets to culminate a weekend of direct action and organizing.

Earlier Friday morning, students at New School University occupied a building but were brutally removed and arrested. Actions took place that night with some police confrontations and more arrests. Meanwhile, the New York City Anarchist Bookfair and Film Fest were taking place just a few blocks away where thousands were gathering to educate, agitate, and organize.

Saturday night. At event advertised as a street party with a cat theme, Catastrophe!, more than 200 gather in Union Square to face down the police state. Confrontations began at the outset, first at the subway station where a mass fare evasion was attempted to protest fare hikes. For two hours or more, youth rampaged through the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Corporate targets were hit throughout the night, including the windows of McDonalds, banks, and a Whole Foods, a symbol of gentrification in the neighborhood.

Throughout the weekend, 34 or more arrests took place surrounding these events, with more following in the next week at spontaneous actions. Were not slowing down. Get ready for a summer of fire in NYC. Get ready for the G20.
