I was gonna guess a bad fuel injector, but you did mention the whole car was shaking and I didnt see a plume of smoke coming from the tail and the knocking wasnt in time with the engine. Cause that is what happen with my 240d

I just did motor mounts on my baby.. she was spitting chunks of rubber and was vibrating so badly the hood was rippling... now everything is better
