Aspiring anti-comedian Chris Manz tells jokes to his childhood Idol, the legendary experimental composer, Terry Riley, arguably one of the most important artists of the 20th century. Terry was delighted to take part in such a strange event, and suggested that the joke structure utilize repetition to reflect the compositional structures of Minimalism, the musical form that he helped establish. After a long day of giving speeches related to his honorary doctrate from Chapman University, lecturing on musicology, and even performing new music, Terry remarked that this was "the best part of the day"

  • I thought this was hilarious. It made my day.

  • That day I spoke with Terry at great length about his work, and he played some amazing music he hasn't yet released. But I'm trying to make a show where artists are encouraged to perform comedy. Usually these interactions are reserved for a much more serious, academic discourse--which is great, but why can't there be both? Terry gave a fantastic lecture and performance that day, at the end of which he said that doing the show was his FAVORITE PART.

  • @llaformer Acknowledgement by mass media or popular culture at large is no confirmation of artistic merit. Likewise, a lack of such acknowledgment says nothing about an artist's work.

  • Q. How many minimalists does it take to?

  • @llaformer

What you need to do is ask all those people you listed who know something about music and they will no doubt testify that Terry "Riley is one of the most important musicians of the age - you cant compare tery to any of these musicians he transcends all of them.

  • arguably one of the "most important artists of the 20th century?" TRY AGAIN. lmao. I never even heard of this guy. Lets review some of the artists of the 20th century shall we?
