I remember Carole as one of my fellow college students in Midland, Michigan at that time. When she won this, we very proud of her. She came to our campus a few months later and it was awesome to have her there as Miss USA.

@eurovisionpizza no one in the USA cares about miss world. it is far a bigger honor to be miss usa or miss universe in this country.

The first runner-up for Miss USA during 1981-1991 represented the USA in the Miss World pageant.

@1teedie I also think that, because the night of Miss Universe 1990 she brought as a star, so georgous and stunning, but just one think:: she did'nt answer exactly what she was asked in the final question and Norway did it, so she won MIss Univese pageant 1990 and USA first runner up.

I just remember how gorgeous Carole Gist was that night! An amazing winner and she broke down so many barriers!

@TCall2004 Why?! If you saw what Texas did with their winners before they became Miss USA ,you would see how they did it. Miss Tx-USA did at the state level what Miss USA did at the national and Miss Universe on a global level. Too bad the level of all of the pageants has gone down.

@kendrix62 - Gina Swanson had been the first runner up to Miss Universe in 1979.
She became Miss World later that year.

Yes, I remember. I also remembered Carole Gist was on Gueraldo and talked about the racist hate mail she got from the Klan. It was terrible, but she dealt with it and was a Miss USA for all people.
