I've always thought this is the kind of song that one would listen before commiting suicide, it has that hopeless vibe into it. Then I realised that it was a subconscious influence of the film Girl, Intrrerupted that I saw some time ago, when Daisy kills herself to this song. I thought that was one of the saddest scenes I've ever seen ...

I first danced to this song at 13 in '64, but it was Herman's Hermits who did the cover and we couldn't hear it enough - mainly because it was a slow dance song, and everybody likes to slow dance.

In 1962 when the super powers were on the edge of armagedon and on the brink of world war III as the result of the Cuban Missile Crisis, somebody wrote this song in fear of losing his or her loved one, it would make Skeeter Davis a household name.
