A 6-year-old boy's face was mauled by a neighbor's pit bull Wednesday afternoon in north Harris County.
The attack happened at a home in the 1300 block of Cross Draw.
Authorities said the boy was visiting a neighborhood friend when he was attacked by the dog. No adults were home at the time, officials told 11 News.
As he was being attacked, the boy's friend alerted neighbors to what was going on. One neighbor grabbed a garden hoe and told authorities he had to "whack" the dog several times before he could get the animal off the boy.
Another neighbor, who happens to be a nurse and treated him until emergency officials arrived, said the boy suffered severe bite injuries to his face and groin area. None of the injuries is believed to be life threatening, authorities said.
The injured boy was transported by ground ambulance to Memorial Hermann Hospital.
The dog was taken by Harris County animal control. Some neighbors said this wasn't the first time the dog has attacked someone.
