  • Why Stanwyck was always treated less reverently than Crawford and Davis is beyond me.Best film noir ever or maybe one of five.

  • Barbara rocks! Whoever denied her the Oscar should have been shot!

  • Barbara in her most chilling portrayal of reptilian evil....superb!

  • @coralarch okay normally i would agree with you except the person who beat her out for this particular performance was ingrid bergman in gaslight... and though barbara is fucking psychotically brilliant in this, bergman just wins, man.

  • I suspect Stanwyck had mixed feelings about this movie. It was hugely successful, but it also typecast her as a femme fatale. A few years later she was complaining in an interview that she could not get parts in good comedy films. She also had to fight to get western roles. She later said "My only problem is finding a way to play my fortieth fallen female in a different way from my thirty-ninth."

  • Why didn't she get an Oscar for this role? 60+ years later, it still thrills!

  • Yes I know. And while Barbara has given plenty of classic performance and was very versatile, she dosen't have the same merits as Bette Davis and Joan Crawford. Both Joan and Bette were class act but they didin't have Barbara's versatility.

  • While Baraba Stanwyck had a long and enormouskly successful acting career on stage, in movies and TV, this is her "signature" role.

And I suspect that after seeing the film, every teenage girl and young woman in the country wanted sunglasses just like the ones Ms. Stanwyck wore in this scene!

  • Stanwyck just seems like a complete sociopath in this scene...she's perfect...what an actress.

  • I found a link to watch this great great movie online:

  • Happy Belated 100th birthday Fred MacMurray!
