Danny Logan's mules, Jim and Joe, came to plow a field for Earth Day 2010 at the John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, NC. Hal Hogsed, Muleskinner. Jim Weaver, Plowman. Folk School student Harrison Topp catches on quick, and B&G Manager John Clarke sings behind the plow (disc harrow, actually) the "Muleskinner Blues." Video by Jan Davidson.

  • I've been reading some of Louis Bromfield's writings about his Malibar Farm in Ohio. He did lots of early agricultural experiments in the 1950's and wrote about them. He claimed that the moldboard plow's pressing down creates a hard pan at the bottom of the blade that makes it hard for roots to grow deeper into the soil. He claimed that these plows were one of the reasons for soil to lose fertility. Have you ever noticed any of this using this type of plow?
