Every July and August, hundreds of thousands of chinook salmon make their way through British Columbia's mighty Fraser River to their natal streams for spawning. At the stretch between Chilliwack and Hope, a fishing technique known as barfishing is commonly used to catch these prized fish.

In this video series, Nick Basok and Chris Gadsden of the Fraser Valley Salmon Society explain the setups and techniques of barfishing. Nick Basok is a retired hatchery technician and currently a staff at the Chilliwack Dart and Tackle. Both Nick and Chris have many decades of fishing experience in the Fraser Valley.

In part one of this video series, Nick explains the general terminal tackle that you need in this fishery.

  • i live up on chilliwack mountain and will be fishing the old orchard bar and am new to salmon fishing but i have a rod and some spoons. are there any particular rigs or pieces of gear that i can use and also any baits for catching the fish? thanks

  • @EnglishMooseStraw In a couple of weeks from now, pink salmon are going to be moving in huge numbers. When that happens, a simple spoon in pink (1/4oz, 3/8oz...) will work very well.

  • Excellent video!

  • @fishingwithrod thanks guys also went out and bought a rig like yours so i could put that on and try out. Again thanks for the advice

  • I know Gill and Pegleg are pretty good but does anyone know how Grassy Bar is? Is it only boat accessible?

  • Ive never really used that kind of bar rig. I usually use the oens with the 3 way swivels and a pencil weight and roe. Thats a great technique you guys are using.,

  • Very educational, thank you. One tip for next time: Loose the background music when talking. It's very hard to keep attention and it's just a bad idea. You don't sound that bad and you have plenty of good things to say without the music. Cheers.

  • Great video.. Love the tips.. very Educational video.

  • thank you guys! it looks like fishing the skeena rive river a little bit but to be honest: i have no experience with fishing the fraser that way:-)

only fished it with jigging , fly und a bottom-bouncer...
