The poem is about Eliot's difficulty in communicating with women. More specifically it relates to three visits he paid on Adeleine Moffat in Boston and his inability to form a friendship with her.

See the notes of Ezra's Pound's "Portrait d'une Femme", the previously posted poem.

The picture is Portrait Of A Lady in Pink, 1888 by William Merritt Chase. It has just for atmosphere and has no connection to the poem.

  • Wonderful reading as always.

But if I may point out a trivial error: in the description you've scrambled the name William Merritt Chase.

  • Thank you, and thanks for pointing this out. It's fixed now.
